Functional fitness is not only for athletes. It is for anyone who walks, bends, carries, lifts or even climbs stairs. There are few of us who wouldn’t fall into that category! Functional fitness focuses on building a body capable of doing real-life activities in real-life positions, not just lifting a certain amount of weight while your body is fixed in a position dictated by a machine.
Conventional weight training isolates muscle groups, but it doesn’t teach the muscle groups to work together. A common (and unfortunate) example, is of the mother, very fit and toned from spending hours at the gym, throwing her back out as she bends over to take her 12kg toddler out of his car seat! This is because the muscles haven’t been trained to work together while overcoming resistance but have simply been trained to work in isolation.
Increasing your level of functional fitness will train your body to perform better in real-life circumstances improving your performance in everyday life.
