Great Running Style – Genetic? Or Learned?

Do you ever notice how some kids run like the wind and others like they were knee high in mud?

Many think that running style is inherited and there's not much you can do to improve it other than to simply run more often. This is often the case in youth sports where athletes are made to run mile after mile. This however is not the best angle of attack. First of all, improved running technique can be taught and learnt. Secondly, by doing a lot of slow running incorrectly, kids only learn to run slowly incorrectly. Children should be taught that one of the most important things to concentrate on with running is movement economy. In other words, taking strides too big for your legs will exhaust you more quickly and swinging the arms in incorrect movements (ie.too much lateral movement) will use up valuable energy you should save for running.

Teaching running technique at the junior level is desirable for quite a number of reasons. The plasticity of the nervous system is high and therefore prone to accept biomechanical changes in movement. By embedding the correct movement patterns at a young age there is a greater chance that the athlete will take this efficient movement through to adulthood. This will significantly reduce the likelihood of movement related overuse injuries such as shin splints, and stress fractures and also ensure that they have a sound basis from which to develop strength, as their bodies develop.

In teens and adult athletes, training programs will focus on the development of power to improve running economy through jump and plyometric training. Although highly effective for older teens and adults, this type of training is less optimal at improving speed in young athletes under the age of 12 - 13. Biomechanical considerations should be the primary focus in improving speed at the pre-pubescent level.
